American Bobtail Cats




American Bobtail cats do not have a long history. Their breed only began in the 1960's. They are a sturdy breed with a wild tabby appearance. American Bobtail cats have been associated with and resembles the lynx or bobcat. Their fur cat be either long or short. The long haired American Bobtail has a coat of medium length, which is very thick. Strange enough their fur does not mat. The short haired breed of American Bobtails are not as common, but as with the long hair; their coat is plush. American Bobtail cats range in size from med to large cats. The male can reach up to 20lbs. Slow to mature, the American Bobtail breed of cat takes two to three years to mature to an adult cat.


American Bobtails love company and are recognized as a very easy going breed of cat. They do tend to have a high level of energy and can be very vocal when seeking attention. This breed is suited for families with children, as American Bobtails love to play. There kind, quiet nature as proved helpful in some treatment programs were stress is a contributing factor. Many nursing homes bring in cats to help sooth elder patients.


Three out of four American Bobtail Cats will be born with bobbed tails. The average tail lengh is 1-4 inches. Some kittens of this cat breed are born with no tail, which means they have a shorten spine. This causes bad hips and rumps. This leave the cats breed prone to many health dispositions due to their shortened spine and poor hips. The American Bobtail breed of cat is short in population and is now becoming a rare breed.
